Create a cool Profile Picture in just 5 steps with Gimp.

There are thousands of such tutorials out there for the same topic "cool profile picture". But I'm sure that not all of them got what you really need. This tutorial can fulfill your requirements to some level as it provide a very minimalistic but still stylish result. And all of that in just 5 steps. Isn't it cooool? if yes then let's do it right now...

  • A picture of your to which you want to convert into something awesome. I'm using this pic of my younger brother as resource.
  • And Gimp any version.
Here's the sample of the result that you can achieve...

Step 1: Open your picture in Gimp.

Step 2: Now go to Image>>Mode and choose Grayscale. This will convert the image into grayscale.

Result of this step is as below:

Step 3: Now open Colors>>Curves.

Step 4: The setting window to adjust the curves will open. Adjust the curves according to the figure given below:

Step 5: That's it now color time...Open Color>>Colorize. Now main part..Look everybody has his own color preference and that's why I give you the option to choose the color for your picture. In colorize settings window increase the Lightness a little bit 10-15, then slide the Hue Bar which will eventually change the color. Set the bar at your preferred state and done.

That's it just apply your preferred colors and post it online...Enjoy

    The individual results would depend on the picture used. I found threshold worked better for my picture. Either you forgot one step or assumed people would know to change the mode back to RGB. Of course, the message at the bottom of the image window telling you to do so when you click on colorize helps but not everybody would notice this. Your picture came out pretty good. Thanks for the tutorial.

    Everything worked until the colorize part. I picked a color, a teal, but nothing happened. so i used the bucket but the color came out grey. i tried to paint in the color with brush, again grey. so i changed the color to a darker teal, all i got with bucket and brush was a darker grey? so where is the colorize fill tool?
